October 23, 2025 (Updated)

NEMA visits CBDA, commends its contributions to sustainable agriculture, food security, and its proactive flood mitigation measures, as well as its participation in NEMA’s 2025 flood response simulation exercise. Both agencies pledge continues collaboration in flood control, disaster management, and climate resilience.

The Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) on Thursday, October 23, 2025, received a high-level delegation from the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), led by the Head of Operations for Yobe and Borno States, Mr. Sirajo Garba, at its headquarters in Maiduguri. The delegation was warmly welcomed by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of CBDA, Alhaji Tijjani Musa Tumsah, alongside the Chairman of the Board of Directors and senior members of the Authority’s management team.

The visit provided a platform for both agencies to exchange ideas and strengthen collaboration in disaster management, flood mitigation, and climate resilience initiatives. Mr. Garba commended the CBDA for its continued innovation in sustainable agriculture and its significant role in ensuring food security, not only within Borno State but across the country. He also acknowledged CBDA’s proactive measures in supporting farmers and communities affected by the devastating floods of the previous year, praising the Authority’s responsiveness and adaptability in the face of climate challenges.

In his remarks, Mr. Garba expressed NEMA’s appreciation for CBDA’s active participation and support during the recently concluded 2025 multi-stakeholder simulation exercise for flood response. He emphasized the importance of continued partnership between both organizations, especially in developing effective flood control mechanisms, improving early warning systems, and enhancing data-driven decision-making for disaster preparedness.

During the meeting, the CBDA Managing Director highlighted the Authority’s efforts in monitoring and responding to climate-related risks through its dedicated Climate Desk Office. He explained that the unit collects rainfall samples and analyzes weather patterns to support planning and implement adaptive strategies that mitigate the impact of extreme weather events on agriculture and livelihoods. This initiative, he noted, reflects CBDA’s commitment to integrating scientific data and innovation into its development and response programs.

The discussions underscored the shared responsibilities of both agencies in promoting climate adaptation, environmental protection, and sustainable development across the region. CBDA and NEMA agreed that stronger coordination and joint initiatives are critical to improving community resilience against floods and other natural disasters that threaten lives, farmlands, and infrastructure.

As a gesture of appreciation, the NEMA delegation presented an appreciation plaque and a copy of the Agency’s 2024 Annual Report to the CBDA Managing Director, in recognition of the Authority’s continued support and partnership.

In conclusion, both organizations reaffirmed their commitment to continuous engagement and collaboration aimed at strengthening disaster preparedness, environmental sustainability, and agricultural resilience. The visit further solidified the strategic relationship between NEMA and CBDA as key partners working to safeguard communities and promote sustainable development in the Chad Basin region and beyond.
