National Inland Waterways Authority Pays Courtesy Visit to Chad Basin Development Authority

October 23, 2025 (Updated)

National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA) pays courtesy call on Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) to explore inter-agency collaboration and explore opportunities for partnership in areas of shared interest, particularly concerning water resources management and development.

The Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) on Thursday, October 23, 2025, welcomed a delegation from the National Inland Waterways Authority (NIWA), Maiduguri Area Office, on a courtesy visit to its headquarters. The delegation was led by the Area Manager, Mr. Faruk Abubakar Imam, and was warmly received by the Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of CBDA, Alhaji Tijjani Musa Tumsah, along with the Chairman of the Board of Directors, Executive Management, and senior officials of the Authority.

The visit focused on strengthening cooperation between both agencies, particularly in areas of mutual interest related to inland waterways management and development. Mr. Imam commended the leadership of the CBDA for its dedication to revitalizing the Authority and reaffirmed NIWA’s commitment to working collaboratively to achieve shared goals in sustainable water resource management.

Discussions during the meeting explored several areas of partnership, including water transportation and navigation, irrigation and agricultural development, flood control and management, as well as environmental conservation and sustainability. Both agencies emphasized the importance of aligning their activities to increase public awareness and leverage each other’s technical expertise for greater impact.

The National Inland Waterways Authority, established to regulate, manage, and develop Nigeria’s inland waterways for navigation, transportation, and economic development, shares a common mandate with the CBDA in the sustainable use of water resources. While NIWA focuses on the development and safety of navigable waterways, CBDA’s mandate centers on agricultural and water resource development within the Chad Basin region. This alignment creates a strong foundation for partnership in promoting integrated water management, enhancing food security, and supporting environmental sustainability.

In closing, both CBDA and NIWA expressed their readiness to collaborate closely and institutionalize engagement frameworks that ensure their activities are harmonized for maximum efficiency and national development. The visit underscored the shared vision of both organizations to harness Nigeria’s water resources for the benefit of communities, economic growth, and environmental resilience.
