On Wednesday, July 9, 2025, the Chad Basin Development Authority (CBDA) welcomed a delegation from the United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (UN OCHA), led by Mr. Trond Jensen, Head of Office. The courtesy visit took place at the CBDA Headquarters in Maiduguri and was received by Engr. Mohammed Shettima, Executive Director (Engineering), on behalf of the Managing Director/CEO, Alh. Tijjani Musa Tumsah.

Mr. Jensen was accompanied by three senior colleagues: Mr. Walid Idris, Zonah Coordinator NIHSA; Mr. Yakoubou Mankara, Head of IM Unit (OCHA); and Mr. Ballama Mustapha. The purpose of the visit was to engage in high-level discussions on the current condition of the Alau Dam and explore sustainable flood control measures, including early warning systems.

The discussions centered on the historical importance of the Alau Dam, its deteriorating structural state, and the increasing risk of over-flooding from the reservoir. Both parties explored a range of strategies for risk mitigation and sustainable management of water infrastructure, particularly in the face of climate change and rising humanitarian needs.

The CBDA expressed appreciation for the UN’s continued commitment to the region and welcomed the opportunity to collaborate further on technical solutions that promote environmental resilience, protect lives and livelihoods, and support the broader Renewed Hope Agenda of the Federal Government.

The meeting concluded on a positive note, with both sides reaffirming their dedication to strengthening partnerships and mobilizing resources to ensure the long-term stability and sustainability of the Alau Dam and surrounding communities.
